WEEK ONE: CREATE YOUR WIKI (7 MAY - 15 MAY 2012)

Here are links to the sections below:

Week 1a: Introduce yourself

Week 1b: Decide on a type of wiki

Week 1c: Create your own wiki

Week 1d: Add your reflection for the week

Week 1e: Listen to a webinar recording

Week 1a: Introduce yourself

Our first task was to introduce ourselves to create a feeling of community. Thank you for doing that! Here is the link to the introductions. Please feel free to greet other participants on the course by commenting on their introductions!

Here is our Week 1 plan of work as a download. (The beauty of a wiki is that you can easily add documents that can be either viewed or downloaded)

Week 1b: Decide on a type of wiki

What is a wiki?

A wiki is a space on the Web where you can share work and ideas, pictures and links, videos and media — and anything else you can think of. It is like a website but it doesn't require any special knowledge of HTML.
Anyone who joins the wiki can write and edit on the wiki. What I like about Wikispaces is that it is free and it makes sharing and collaborating on all kinds of content as easy for your students as it is for you.

A great example

Watch how this 2nd grade teacher uses a wiki in her classroom. This is an amazing video and gives a good idea of what a wiki is as well as how it can be used: This is not a YouTube video so click on the video link below the picture to be taken to the viewing site.

Types of wikis

I have created a Sideshare called 'Types of wikis' to help you decide on the type of wiki you wish to create. It is important to decide on your type of wiki first as it will influence the URL that you choose. You'll see I have chosen the URL Schoolnetwikicourse.wikispaces.com as it reflects what the wiki is about (URLs have no spaces between words). Please look through the presentation and explore a bit. With Wikispaces you can create as many free wikis as you like which is great! But please decide what type this first one will be even if you only use it for the course.

Remember that a Slideshare can be viewed in full screen by pressing the little box in the bottom right hand corner and it can also be downloaded.

(I have also uploaded this Powerpoint 'Types of wikis' as a PDF for easier downloading.)

Week 1c: Create your own wiki

I will be presenting a short webinar on this next Tuesday (15th May) at 6pm but in the meantime I am putting up the Slideshare for anyone who wishes to go ahead and create theirs. Please note that Wikispaces kindly gives a wiki with paid functionalities to educators FREE so make sure you choose that option when you create your wiki.

With regard to the webinars, they are fairly short - between 15 - 25 minutes. The great thing about them is that you can type-chat to other participants during the presentation and add ideas. The programme is provided on the left in the navigation bar. You will receive a reminder on the day. However, the link will be placed on the wiki the following day if you wish to rather watch and listen in your own time.

Week 1d: Add your reflection for the week

Please click on this link to write your end of week one reflection. In my thinking Week 1 finishes as soon as you have created your wiki. You could relate any difficulties (and victories) you might have experienced and (hopefully) add your new Wikispaces address! Week 1 officially ends after the webinar on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday we start with Week 2 which involves making your wiki look like a website.

Here is the comment/reflection link:

Week 1e: Listen to a webinar recording

This is a recording of the webinar from Tuesday evening entitiled How to create a wiki using Wikispaces (9 minutes) should you wish to see the process. Unfortunately something went technologically wrong towards the end of the webinar, so in order to cut out that part I had to put the recording into Windows Live Movie Maker and upload it to YouTube. Consequently the quality is poor. Hope it still helps!
